St Johns is the Apache County seat, on the Little Colorado River at about 5,650 feet and about 29 miles north of Springerville. Spanish settlers called it El Vadito before it was renamed San Juan, then St. Johns, around 1880, and Lyman Lake State Park is just south of town. This high-desert grassland and juniper country is lower, drier and windier than the mountain towns, so pack rats in juniper and ranch outbuildings, fall mouse movement indoors, black widows in sheds and woodpiles, harvester ants, late-summer crickets and grasshoppers, and goatheads and tumbleweeds are the everyday issues. Scorpions are far less common here than in the low deserts.

This is high-desert grassland and juniper, lower, drier and windier than the mountain towns to the south. That changes the pest mix compared with Eagar or Show Low.
What we typically see through the year:
Pack rats build stick nests in juniper and ranch outbuildings and chew vehicle wiring. Deer mice and house mice move indoors in fall. The Arizona Department of Health Services says the deer mouse is the primary hantavirus carrier in Arizona, that most cases are reported from northern Arizona, and Apache County was among the counties with confirmed cases in 2024.
Do not sweep or vacuum droppings dry. That puts dust in the air. Open doors and windows to ventilate a closed building first, spray droppings and nests with disinfectant, let them soak, then wet-wipe with disposable materials while wearing gloves and bag the waste.
University of Arizona Extension describes the Arizona bark scorpion as a low-desert species. At St Johns' elevation, with cold, freezing winters, scorpions are far less common than in Arizona's low deserts. They are not a regular St Johns problem, but if one turns up, we'll identify it and tell you whether any treatment makes sense.
We serve Concho (ZIP 85924) on the same route as St Johns (ZIP 85936), and Springerville and Eagar to the south in Round Valley.

Mostly in fall, as nights cool. Deer mice and house mice look for shelter in homes, garages and sheds, and pack rats nest in juniper, outbuildings and vehicle engine bays.

Sheds, woodpiles, irrigation boxes and other undisturbed outdoor spots. Wear gloves when reaching into those areas, and we can treat the perimeter and harborage.
About late March to April at St Johns' elevation, before weeds germinate as soil warms, earlier than the mountain towns and later than the low desert.
